Ashtanga Yoga
To begin our exploration of the various types of Yoga, we will talk today about Ashtanga Yoga. Praised for many years across the Atlantic by our American friends, Ashtanga Yoga is gradually making its mark in Europe and Yoga schools are flourishing across France, much to our delight.
Ashtanga Yoga, much more than a meditative activity, can today be considered a physical activity in its own right . Ashtanga Yoga is in fact a dynamic and physical Yoga which engages the body as a whole and provides it with all the benefits of gentle but complete and deep gymnastics.
At the heart of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is breathing . Practitioners must learn to become aware of their breath and work on their breathing. Thus, the postures and movements of Ashtanga are accompanied by deep inhalations and exhalations underlined by light throat sounds. The rib cage inflates and deflates while the belly is held, thus increasing its tone. Working on breathing requires a lot of concentration. The practitioner must then concentrate on themselves, on what is happening in their own body. They thus abstract from the outside and enter a semi-meditative phase allowing them to forget stress , release tension , calm their mind and reconnect with their body .
Added to breathing, the sequence of postures (Asanas) and specific movements (Vinyasa) allows the body's energy to circulate better and the muscles to strengthen deeply. A one and a half hour Ashtanga yoga session allows you to perform nearly 50 postures, some more or less acrobatic depending on your level of practice. This discipline requires skill, confidence and training and it is important to be aware of your abilities and not try to rush things.
Ashtanga Yoga, this dance of the body mixed with the rhythm of your breath, will help you to shape your figure , to refine it , to regain shape, strength, stability and flexibility for your well-being both physical and mental.
Ashtanga Yoga Asana: Tree Pose
Stand up straight with both feet next to each other. Breathe in and out deeply several times.
Stretch both arms out to the sides, palms facing the sky.
Transfer your body weight to your left leg. The sole of your foot should be rooted to the ground.
Lift your right leg while pointing your toes toward the floor. At the same time, rotate your knee outward as soon as possible.
Bring your right foot onto the inside of your left thigh so that your heel is at crotch level.
Bring your palms together above your head.
Hold the position for 5 to 10 breathing movements (inhalation + exhalation) while staring at a point straight ahead at eye level.
Lower your arms and let them hang by your sides. Turn your knee inward and rest your foot flat on the floor.
Inhale and exhale several times, then repeat the exercise on the right leg.
