Ayurvedic Diet: A Holistic Approach to Dietetics

As mentioned in our article “ Introduction to Ayurveda “, each individual has their own constitution, a careful balance between the elements air, ether, fire, water and earth. The body and mind of each person are thus under the influence of three Doshas (combination of two elements), among which one type of Dosha dominates (Vata, Pitta or Kapha). The diet must then be adapted according to the type of Dosha that predominates in an individual.

To do this, it’s important to consider the different flavors present in food. While we only talk about sweet, salty, sour, and bitter flavors, Ayurvedic medicine distinguishes no fewer than six flavors, also called Rasa. Sour, hot, sharp, salty, sweet, and bitter foods must be carefully measured for a diet that is fully in harmony with your constitution.

In upcoming articles, you’ll have the opportunity to determine your dominant Dosha. This will be followed by articles on dietary advice tailored to the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Doshas.

General dietary principles

While waiting to discover in more detail the Diet that is particularly suited to your constitution, you can observe these few general principles recommended by Ayurvedic medicine:

- It is better to opt for a vegetarian Diet

- Fruits should preferably be eaten before meals or between meals

- Avoid eating food taken out of the refrigerator and consume it at room temperature instead.

- Enjoy your meals in a quiet place and chew your food well

- Avoid eating when you are emotionally moved or when you are not feeling hungry.

- Digest well before eating again and avoid snacking

- Bring variety into your Diet, don’t hesitate to discover new flavors and avoid systematically consuming certain foods

- Choose fresh and organic foods and avoid nutrient-depleted foods, animal proteins, refined oils and sugars, and stimulants such as tobacco, coffee, alcohol, or soda.
